Member of the Schleswig assembly of the estates (1844-1846) and of the Schleswig-Holstein assembly of the estates (1848-1851); president of the provisional government of Schleswig-Holstein (March-October 1848); member of the Frankfurt National Assembly (November 1848-May 1849); member of the governorship for Schleswig and Holstein (1849-1851); then publicist and from 1860 Kurator of the University of Bonn.
