Prussian diplomat and statesman. Attaché to the Prussian legation in Bern (1820), then secretary of legation in Munich, Copenhagen and Naples; chargé d'affaires to Darmstadt (1830-1834), also accredited to Baden and Nassau; Legationsrat in the foreign ministry (1835); envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary in Brussels (1840) and in Paris (1846); foreign minister (March-June 1848); member of the first chamber (1849-1851) and the Erfurt Diet (1850); given the title Freiherr in 1841.
