eldest son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine and Julia von Battenberg. British naval officer from the age of 15; admiral 1904; First Sea Lord, 1912, resigned 27 October 1914. From 1917 Louis Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven.
